London College of Fashion graduate Eva Coppens opened Scandinavian design emporium Førest in 2012. Born out of her love of mid-century furniture, Coppens began by opening a pop-up shop on Clerkenwell Road and after the venture enjoyed great success, she took the plunge and opened a permanent location a few doors down. Housed in a former jewellery workshop, Coppens recalls how bit by bit as she chipped away at the once faded interior to uncover ‘a beautiful space with lots of great characteristics’ including a pine floor, brick walls and a hidden fireplace.
Those characteristics are now complemented with an impressive edit of classic and authentic pieces; the ever-changing and handpicked collection has included furniture from Dane Erik Buch, Arne Vodder and Peter Hvidt as well as lighting from Louis Poulson, Verner Panton and Arne Jacobsen. Selected furniture is brought to life with colourful textiles and prints from designer Tamasyn Gambell whose vibrant work is stocked in Liberty London and Tate Modern and a small collection of pottery can also be found dotted around the store.
The name Førest is said to reference the inspiration Scandinavian designers take from nature as well as the open, creative and interesting space found inside this central London store. Coppens also hopes to accommodate ‘a mutually complementary mix of old and new art forms through a series of exhibitions and collaborations with contemporary artists’ in store; check the Førest website for more details.
