Founded by the godson of a tea trader, Canadian born Jens de Gruyter grew up in a household where tea was highly respected. With an inherited passion for fine and rare teas, de Gruyter wanted to create a modern yet simple specialist tea store and in late 2012, P & T opened in Berlin's well-heeled Charlottenburg district.
De Gruyter designed P & T's minimalist interior in collaboration with product designer Fabian von Ferrari and the result is a museum-like surround with comparable tranquillity. The concept behind the store is simple; each variety of leaf is displayed in an open and informative sample box (with all boxes ordered by grade of oxidation) that allows the buyer to learn more about, and savour, the scent of the tea before purchasing.
P & T stocks a colourful assortment of organic fine teas including white, yellow, green, oolong, black and herbal teas, alongside scented and blended infusions sourced by de Gruyter directly from small farms in Kenya, China, Korea, Japan and Taiwan depending on the season (some teas can only be harvested once a year).
With a focus on the culture behind tea, the store celebrates the art of presentation through their selection of decorative objects that include tea sets, related accessories and stationary; a tasteful selection of cards and notebooks is also on hand to jot down tasting notes. P & T also offers Gongfu-style tasting stations to help customers appreciate, savour and learn more about the flavour and aroma of the teas on offer. The store hosts regular Tea and Focus Seminars that examine the history and culture behind different blends; check the website for details.
