Just a stone’s throw from Liverpool’s iconic Anglican cathedral is Blackburne Terrace, a small collection of Georgian townhouses set back from the road and partially hidden by tall leafy lime trees. After scouring the country for two years in search of the perfect location for a luxury city B&B, husband and wife duo Sarah and Glenn Whitter had almost given up the search before they stumbled across number 2 Blackburne Terrace.
When Glenn and Sarah first visited the house, they knew their search had ended and immediately set to work. Opened in May 2014, the attention to detail throughout the townhouse is outstanding and each room has a distinctive personality thanks to Glenn’s clever interior design and Stockport-based Kirstie Hull’s sensitive upholstering and furniture selection.
A family had privately owned the house, built in 1826, since the Second World War and through the decades it was passed down to members of the same family, saving it from the clutches of eager student accommodation developers who dominate Liverpool’s Georgian quarter. Nearly all original features have been retained and the Whitters have worked tirelessly to restore the house; shutters grace the windows in the light-filled downstairs drawing room and fireplaces are dotted throughout all three storeys. Glenn, a former spatial design student at Chelsea College of Art, told us how he finds light and space to be important considerations when designing an interior. His process involves ‘listening to the house’ and responding to how materials sit in line with spatial arrangements and light. This careful attention to detail has paid off and the four guestrooms feel spacious, airy and warm.
Each room is distinctive and traditional furnishings complement the splashes of vibrant colour and pieces of contemporary art found throughout the house. No furnishings are the same but it works- in room 1 an early 19th century mahogany compactum sits comfortably next to a reupholstered cerulean button sofa and outside room 3 a duo of antique cinema seats face a giant poster of the 1963 film, A New Kind Of Love.
IDMCo’s top pick is the north facing room 3. Infused with soft blue tones and complemented by a discreet marble bathroom, the room boasts a king size bed dressed with 500 thread count Egyptian cotton sheets and a beautiful bespoke Morgan Ashram wool rug based on the reverse side of a piece of mid-Georgian embroidery. The trio of floor-to-ceiling windows overlooks the cobbled terrace below and the room, despite its position, remains blissfully quiet.
All rooms are equipped with Noble Isle toiletries, homemade macaroons made by local chocolatier The Chocolate Cellar, fresh milk and Lavazza coffee. Breakfast is an impressive affair and Sarah and Glenn use mainly local suppliers to offer a wide selection, from Danish pastries and croissants from local bakery The French Corner to Craster artisan kippers. At the communal breakfast table you may meet visiting university professors or couples enjoying a weekend retreat. Understated and stylish, 2 Blackburne Terrace is Liverpool’s best kept secret.
