Housed in a former Italian hairdressers in the heart of Sheffield's vibrant Antiques Quarter is neighbourhood bakery, Forge Bakehouse. Co-owner and artisan baker Martha Brown studied at Nottinghamshire's Artisan School of Food before returning to Sheffield to open Forge in 2012 with a team of current and previous alumni.
Brown created the interior from scratch and sourced most materials from across the north of England, picking up a Tom Chandley oven from Manchester as well as plywood from local timber merchant Arnold Lavers. But Forge's main feature is the large window to the front that is continually stocked and decorated with piles of freshly baked sourdoughs, such as light rye loaves, as well as more experimental additions including raisin and rosemary and fig and walnut, a hit with Sheffield's early risers.
Inside sit slabs of Foccacia, freshly baked pastries and puddings - don't miss Forge's famous Portuguese custard tart- but IDMCo's top pick is the light rye with caraway, a deeply flavoured centre surrounded by a dark crust, topped with caraway seeds, bread with real guts.
A short walk away from antique retailers and occasional vintage markets, Forge is a a popular breakfast pit stop. Arrive early (Forge opens at 9am Mon-Sat, 10am on Sundays) to snag a pastry fresh from the oven and pull up a chair to witness the bakers at work.
Follow Forge's Facebook page for regular updates - a pop-up pizzeria is rumoured to be in the pipeline.
