In Södermalm's SoFo (south of Folkungagatan), there's a wealth of creative and eclectic independents including Grandpa, a local interiors and clothing boutique that presents a selection of Scandinavian and international fashion alongside vintage furniture and miscellaneous objects. Located on Södermannagatan, Grandpa can be found in a cluster of stores next to Swedish pastry and coffee stop Ill Caffé, florist Christoffers Blommor and raincoat store Stutterheim.
Co-founder Anders Johansson left his background in finance to open Grandpa in 2003 with friends Martin Sundberg, Anders Johansson and Jonas Pelz. Since the store opened the trio have kept their commitment to sustainability, evident through Grandpa's seasonal selection of clothing, furniture and publications. Alongside their in-house brand is a blend of Nordic and international men’s and womenswear including Scandi favourites Han Kjøbenhavn, Sandqvist and Wood Wood as well as labels such as Ally Capellino, Converse, Folk and Grenson Shoes.
The store is set over two levels and the ground floor presents Grandpa’s clothing and lifestyle collection. Vintage Scandinavian maps decorate a feature wall and on our visit we spotted printed matter by Swedish design agency Dry Things and small insect prints by Göran Liljeberg; watch out for the small but impressive selection of stationary on offer from Papier Tigre, Kaweco and Leuchtturm 1917.
Downstairs the basement is filled with a mix of mid-century furniture and objects including vintage biology and anatomy posters, old lab equipment and school chairs. The store layout was designed by Johansson, Sundberg and Pelz has been created to feel like a living room and despite recommendations otherwise the trio have retained this arrangement to ensure a comfortable and welcoming atmosphere. Alongside the store in Södermalm, Grandpa also has stores in Kungsholmen (opened 2007) and in Gothenburg (opened 2010).
