A morning staple in many households but traditionally restricted to the breakfast table, Groed has pulled porridge into the spotlight. The first porridge bar opened in Nørrebro in autumn 2011 and since then the brand has remained loyal to its staple breakfast item; with a view to revitalise porridge's somewhat fusty image, the store promotes the health and financially-friendly benefits of a bowl of oats and milk. Founder Lasse Andersen, who dreamt up the idea of a porridge bar whilst studying in London, has worked tirelessly to create Groed and his porridge love affair has paid off.
The store's menu is extensive and non-porridge specific; on our visit we even spotted rice pudding, rødgrød and Italian risotto. The traditional Asian chicken congee is a firm favourite and a regular on Groed's monthly menu but be sure to try the traditional apple pie or four grain porridge with carrot juice, a zesty wake up call. Groed's ever-changing menu is based on the availability of local seasonal produce and is also testament to the flexible nature of porridge.
The compact porridge bar stocks Groed's own extensive collection of porridge oats and provisions to take home; check out the Porridge cookbook, a ‘mush-concept’ bible featuring multiple creative reinterpretations of porridge, from risotto to Asian risgrød.
If your itinerary includes a visit to the bustling food market Torvehallerne, swing by Groed’s newest porridge bar for a hearty breakfast before exploring the streets of Copenhagen.
