Opened in October 2014 in Wirral's leafy Oxton Village, Homebrew is a speciality bottle shop run by local, Jack Harrison.

Tired of the usual beer selections, Jack carefully handpicked a range of craft beers, ales and ciders from across the world in order to promote smaller and lesser-known breweries. He tells us ‘the variation in taste worldwide is incredible and so many brews are inspired by their local surroundings and heritage’. This global localism is evident in Homebrew’s selection- from Liverpool Craft Beers who have affectionately named one of their bottles after their brewing home, Love Lane, to the local owl that appears on a bottle of Hitachino Nest, created by Japanese brewery Kiuchi.

Homebrew’s selection is housed on industrial shelving units and originates from Europe, USA and beyond. There is a healthy selection of local favourites from Liverpool Organic, Mad Hatter, Manchester-based Marble and North Wales brewery Purple Moose alongside a small but well-consider wine range that rests on a vintage shoe rack salvaged from a factory in East London. The shop also features reclaimed wood flooring, an olive tree, industrial lighting sourced from a mill in Yorkshire and a good selection of beer magazines and books to browse.

If you’re unsure about what to take home, check out the ‘bottle of the week’ pick chalked up on a blackboard of recommendations next to the counter or ask the knowledgeable staff. Jack’s top pick is Inedit, a light barley malt and wheat beer devised by Ferran Adrià with El Bulli restaurant manager, Juli Soler and sommeliers Ferran Centelles and David Seijas- the recipe has evolved over nearly two years and through 400 versions.

If you're in Oxton for the evening, try and nab a table at Merseyside's only Michelin starred restaurant, Fraiche, located just across the road.
