A Brooklyn-based boutique dedicated to craftsmanship, quality and uniqueness; Joinery is a slow fashion stalwart that presents a thoughtful selection of well-made housewares, womenswear, accessories and vintage goods. Since 2011, owner Angela Silva has continued to build Joinery’s impressive inventory which includes both international labels, as well as New York designers such as The Hillside, Suzanne Rae and Wolcott Takemoto.
While working as an art director Angela started 'How To Change a Flat', a lifestyle blog that cataloged her inspirations and shared her design discoveries both from international lines and local designers. The blog spurred Angela to realise the Joinery webshop along with the support of her significant other Emil whose endeavours include Brroklyn-based store Hickorees Hard Goods and The Hillside label. Joinery started with a trip to Brazil (where Angela grew up), having returned with lots of handmade textiles and discovering a several designers. The carefully-sourced, eclectic mix of hard-to-find clothing labels includes Luisa Et La Luna, Levi's Vintage Clothing and Farrell and Co. alongside homewares by Redecker, Riess, Digne Yberg and Helen Levi.
Born and raised in Brazil, Angela proudly keeps her roots intertwined with the Joinery offering by presenting exclusive items such as the hand-woven Artisan rugs and blankets, made in Minas Gerais, a state in southern Brazil. Every blanket is made by a traditional tapestry technique using wooden looms and requires two weavers.
Inside, the deceptively simple yet well-designed store layout creates open and intimate setting. A fine balance of unstained, unfinished poplar, American Clay-plastered walls, oiled-pine flooring and metal fittings completes the stores foundation, while the ceiling beams have been burned using the shou-sugi-ban technique. Notable furnishing includes a centre table made by Brooklyn-based furniture designers Nightwood, a brass chandelier by Lindsay Adelman and garment racks by Serbian designer Ana Kras whose designs have a utilitarian aesthetic. Something not seen before is the tumbleweed underneath the display tables and in the corners of the store, all sourced from Prairie Tumbleweed Farm in Kansas.
A welcoming atmosphere, Angela has created the ideal space to display her wares without sacrificing any emphasis on the details.
