In the fashionable end of East London, a short walk from Shoreditch High Street and Brick Lane, sits design-led homeware store, Labour and Wait. Co-owners Rachel Wythe-Moran and Simon Watkins formerly worked in menswear design before finding themselves frustrated with continuous seasonal redesign and the demands of retail trends and this prompted to the pair to create a space stocking readily available and functional products.
Labour and Wait opened in 2000 with a belief that simple and honest design can go hand in hand with quality and utility. Pieces are sourced from across the globe to form a neat collection of durable everyday classics immune to the whims of fashion.
The store first started out in a Victorian terrace on Cheshire Street before moving to its current Redchurch Street location in 2012. Housed in an old Truman Brewery pub formerly know as the Dolphin, the store retains the original emerald green and brick tiled facade and inside sits a vast array of hardware, stationary, tools and clothing. The display table in the middle of the shop showcases a commonplace assortment of objects from wallets and accessories to tools such as torches, scissors, bottle openers and pen knifes. On our visit we spotted pieces from Falcon Enamelware crockery, Stanley flasks, Alywch all-weather notebooks and Postalco - everything you need for your home, garden or office.
Alongside their bricks and mortar store, Labour and Wait also have a concession on the fourth floor of Dover Street Market as well as concessions in Japanese store Bshop (Kobe, Osaka and Tokyo).
