Previously dominated by a few large companies, the coffee scene in Melbourne has exploded in the last decade. A wave of small speciality coffee shops and roasters has washed over the city including café and roastery Market Lane Coffee, located in Pahran Market with three more coffee outposts at Thierry Street, Faraday Street and Vic Market. Renowned cheese importer Will Studd opened Market Lane Coffee alongside his daughter Fleur and Jason Scheltus.

In 2008, Fleur, previously of Melbourne Coffee Merchants, an importer of high-quality green coffees from around the world, joined forces with Scheltus to start Market Lane after meeting at London’s Monmouth Coffee. The duo’s passion for flavour and a commitment to a high-quality coffee experience meant extensive bean sourcing from the world’s best estates and farms and many hours of production testing.

With a commitment to 100% traceability, Market Lane Coffee is sourced in small and seasonal batches to ensure the highest quality and integrity in each cup. The trio’s pursuit for purity means they are constantly travelling to meet farmers, frequently returning with bags of beans and stories. Market Lane’s single coffee origins mainly include Guatemala, Ethiopia, Kenya and El Salvador as Scheltus explains ‘East Africa is where the growing conditions are ideal as it’s also coffee’s natural home’.

Market Lane Coffee on Faraday Street opened in January 2013 and was designed by Sarah Trotter of Hearth Studio as a temporary store. Residing in a former residential Victorian room, the store can easily be picked up and placed elsewhere as a result of the minimal and compact space. The building’s original features have been respectfully repurposed, including a prominent windowsill of external bluestone and internal bull-nosed redwood that acts as a service area. Interior features such as the taps and light fittings were either salvaged or second hand and American Oak was used throughout alongside geometric tiling. Market Lane's industrially slick brand identity and packaging was designed Victoria-based Swear Words, who created Market Lane’s branding based on their scientific approach towards coffee education.

If you're spending time in the neighbourhood, check out Market Lane’s neighbours including local bakery Baker D Chirico, The Carlton Wine Room, Pizzeria DOC and popular bar and restaurant, The Town Mouse.
