Copenhagen’s meat packing district, Kødbyen (literally ‘meat city’) is home to a creative cluster of art cafes, eateries, and galleries. In Den brune Kødby (‘the brown part’), the district’s oldest area, is Mother, an Italian restaurant focused solely on quality and good company. Housed in an industrial setting, Mother has created a paired-back interior to suitably complement their uncomplicated and wholesome Italian cooking.
The exterior is peppered with communal wooden benches and during the summer months, orange woollen blankets are distributed to diners in the evening. Despite the cool glass symmetrical facade, Mother has retained warmth through the use of natural materials throughout; including untreated wooden dining tables, a wood log wall feature on the eastern side and candlelit tables. The window displays also feature colourful orange thread tangled in small wooden branches, whilst larger branches are mounted on the walls to double up as a coat rails.
Mother’s commitment to the organic is also reflected in the menu that features locally sourced seasonal ingredients and artisan produce from Italy. Committed to simple and wholesome fare, Mother is the favourite haunt of families and groups of friends. The restaurant’s wood fired oven is sat proudly in the middle of the open plan kitchen and overlooked by eager diners hoping to get a glimpse of the machine behind the operation. Most produce is made in-house including Mother’s freshly baked bread, sourdough pizza and roasted fish, meat and vegetables. Paired with Italian produce, Mother’s commitment to authenticity is evident; on our visit we popped in for Sunday brunch, a lively help-yourself affair offering hearty staples such as pizzas, pastas and salads.
