A low-key venue serving up homecooked Indian fare, Mowgli is Bold Street’s newest addition located in Liverpool’s ropewalks district.

The restaurant is the brainchild of Nisha Katona, a barrister, cookbook author and self-styled ‘curry evangelist’. A British-born Indian whose parents relocated to Liverpool in 1968, Katona aims to demystify curry making and track the evolution of Indian cuisine through culture and history by transforming inexpensive and often seasonally grown ingredients into her own curry creations.

The food offering is based around ‘chat’, savoury snacks served at roadside stalls (literally translated the word means ‘to lick’) and the menu presents a compact list of street chat, whole meals, street meats, carbs and dishes taken from the Hindu kitchen. Drinks include lassis, wines and signature cocktails (try the Kerelan Southside- gin, lemon, sugar, mint and kaffir lime leaves) and the short late night menu, served between 9:30pm until midnight, is popular with night time diners.

Inside, the Mowgli interior was designed to recreate Katona’s fond childhood memories of Indian night markets. Designed by Liverpool firm R2 Architecture (R2A) with custom-made furniture from local firm Baldock's, the space is pared down and features unusual furnishings uncharacteristic of a traditional Indian restaurant (the bar is clad in untreated railway sleepers and multiple birdcage chandeliers hang from the ceiling, casting abstract shadows across the walls).

The Mowgli branding and visual identity (also by R2A) features an illustrated monkey, a symbol inspired by Katona’s family who are originally from Varanasi, where wild monkeys roam free.
