With just a low-key sign, Omotesando Koffee is a hard-to-find coffee shop located in a residential neighbourhood between Omotesando and Gaienmae. Beyond a traditional Japanese fence and hidden behind by unkempt foliage, Omotesando Koffee was originally designed as a temporary pop-up by owner Eiichi Kunitomo before opening permanently in 2011.
Originally from Osaka, Kunitomo started his coffee career in 2001 by learning the craft when studying in Naples (Italy). After, Kunitomo returned to Japan to offer his invaluable knowledge to the slowly evolving espresso culture (filter coffee is still very popular). To combat the crippling high rents, Kunitomo’s coffee kiosk is located in a renovated part of a Omotesando residence and this has afforded him the luxury of focusing solely on premium quality speciality coffee; there’s not even indoor seating, just coffee on the go.
Inside, the minimal decor by Yosuke Hayashi of studio 14sd has been designed with function in mind. Kunitomo operates within a cube frame (approximately 3m x 3m) using only a La Cimbali machine to serve a menu of hot and iced coffee alongside selected snacks including ‘Kashi’- tiny cubes of baked Custard similar to French canelés and served in coffee filters. The steel frame structure that Kunitomo works within can easily be taken apart and reassembled as the shop pops up. The steel frame was designed by Tomohiro Kato of Eding:Post who also created the brand’s identity.
Omotesando Koffee shares the same neighbourhood with one of the most famous tonkatsu restaurants in Tokyo, Maisen, located around the corner from the Kunitomo’s coffee kiosk.
