As one of the country’s leading photography galleries, the Open Eye runs an regular programme of exhibitions attracting local and international audiences. Founded in 1977, the Open Eye is a non-profit gallery committed to showcasing contemporary photography and related media. Widely recognised as a leading specialist photography venue (and the only one of its kind in the North West), the Open Eye has built its reputation by consistently promoting the enjoyment and understanding of photography for all.

The gallery creates challenging and entertaining experiences to encourage visitors to appreciate innovative photography. Supporting established and emerging artists, the gallery encourages the development of practical, critical and professional skills and is home to a permanent archive containing photographs from the 1930s to the present day. With approximately 1,600 prints from more than 100 photographers, the archive contains works from both unknown and leading international artists and the gallery has a particular focus on work made in and around Liverpool, including portraits, urban landscapes and social documentaries.

In November 2011, the Open Eye moved into a new purpose-built home in Mann Island, one of the city’s most prestigious and prominent developments on the Liverpool waterfront. Opening on to a large covered public square, the gallery is housed over two floors showcasing the Open Eye’s international programme of cutting edge contemporary photography.

The gallery is complemented by a small shop stocking a collection of cameras, equipment, film, publications and merchandise.
