In Amsterdam’s historic Centrum district you’ll find Our Current Obsessions, a concept store that doubles up as an atelier, shop, gallery and creative agency. Founded by Joachim Baan in August 2014, Our Current Obsessions is a project that every three months, take an obsession and explores it alongside brands and individuals both on and offline.
A man of many talents, Baan’s previous work includes art direction at Staat and Blend magazine and the launch of Another Something in 2007, a digital platform that shares the beauty of culture, fashion, art, architecture or cycling. Baan’s focus on communication design has attracted an international client list including Volkskrant Magazine and the Centraal Museum. Alongside his creative platform, Baan is also the creative director of Amsterdam-based Boutique Tenue de Nîmes and the Red Wing Shoes Amsterdam store.
Baan and his brother Iwan run the Our Current Obsessions gallery on Schippersgracht 7. Their first ‘obsession’ to be presented in store was NOIR in collaboration with Genève-based Gertrud & George (pictured). A hand painted ‘Noir’ sign by local artist Guido De Boer sat outside the store and inside, a 21 piece collection by Gertrud & George was displayed alongside Baan’s ‘World of Black’, a diverse selection of objects from all over the globe including art pieces by Ramon Haindl, Raymond Lemstra & Sybren Karst, Raymond Teitsma and Guido de Boer. Baan’s careful selection of cosmetics, scented candles, books, ceramics and artwork showcase the depth of the current obsession, a theme that spans across multiple products. A Cees Braakman for Pastoe closet acts as the feature piece in the studio and is filled with an assortment of products by Tenue de Nîmes, Skins Cosmetics, Mendo Books, Azami, Chocolatl, Mobilia Woonstudio and Tinin’s The Black Island by Belgian cartoonist Hergé. Watch out for Baan’s own personal selection of miscellaneous items, from stuffed animals and skulls by Acne Jr to Japanese Kokeshi dolls.
Keep a close eye on the Our Current Obsessions website as the gallery space will change every three to six months to present the next obsession by Baan.
