Situated in Liverpool's Georgian quarter is Puschka, an intimate bistro serving up modern British dishes made with locally sourced produce. Founded in 2001, Puschka sits on Rodney Street, birthplace of former Prime Minister William Gladstone and home to the impressively preserved house and studio of renowned portrait photographer Edward Chambré Hardman.

With a farm-to-plate ethic, most of Puschka's produce is sourced locally. Suppliers include Claremont Farm in Wirral, Walkmill flour from Chester and the Liverpool Cheese Company. The menu, devised by co-owners Doug Eglin and Glen Dumbell, is predominantly British with a twist; appetisers include wood pigeon, figs, blackberries, sherry and hazelnut. From little soda bread loaves through to tantalising ice creams (such as olive oil and sea salt) chef Glen and his team make everything. The thoughtfully selected wine menu is complemented by a rotating list of guest bottles alongside a healthy range of local ales from the likes of Liverpool Craft Beer and a dinky cocktail list.

The vibrant fuchsia interior is offset with oak wall panelling and vintage oak block flooring and is filled with natural light thanks to the ceiling-to-floor windows of the old shop front. A popular spot with concert and theatre goers (the Grade II listed Liverpool Philharmonic Hall is a short walk away), the evening service is usually very busy so be sure to book ahead.
