Sat between Liverpool’s business district, city centre and iconic waterfront is Castle Street. Once home to the medieval and sadly demolished Liverpool Castle, the street sits at on a slight slope just behind the acclaimed Mann Island waterfront development and Liverpool’s iconic Cunard Building. A popular lunch spot with professionals, Castle Street is steeped in history and home to a small collection of restaurants and cocktail bars including Salt House Bacaro, a Venetian cicheti (small plates) restaurant and Campari bar.
Created by the team behind city centre eatery Salt House Tapas and brassiere Hanover Street Social, Bacaro opened its doors in March 2014. The interior, reminiscent of an Italian kitchen boasts white tiled walls, a long wooden bar top sourced from Venice and individually designed lighting. The well-stocked floor-to-ceiling Campari bar, usually buzzing in the evening with an after-work crowd, offers up an impressive list including Negronis, Aperol Spritz and Tocco Rosso alongside an extensive Italian wine list.
Small plates are cooked up by Head Chef Matt Walsh, whose passion for Mediterranean flavours is evident throughout the compact menu that features charcuterie (we recommend the acorn-fed Jamón ibérico), pizzettes, staple Italian meat and fish dishes and some more experimental rifts on traditional fare. The pudding menu also doesn't disappoint; on our visit we sampled the light rosewater and buttermilk panna cotta with caramelised oranges and honeycomb.
Coincide your visit with a tour of Liverpool’s impressive yet soot-stained Georgian 1749 Town Hall (located a few doors down), described by English Heritage as ‘one of the finest surviving town halls of the eighteenth century’.
