In Manchester’s Northern quarter is Takk, an Icelandic coffee house serving up hand-roasted coffee, drip coffee and a lunchtime menu of soups, sandwiches and homemade cakes. With a signature espresso blend 'Cult of Done' from London-based Workshop Coffee Co., Takk also presents coffee from roasters across Europe including The Barn (Berlin) and Clifton Coffee Co (Bristol).
Founded by Phillip Hannaway, Takk wouldn't look out of place in urban Reykjavik and many Nordic design pieces are scattered throughout the store including reclaimed school desks, mismatched tables and chairs, a mini library and Icelandic wall art. Lighting designed by Urban Cottage Industries is suspended from the ceiling and a purpose-built bookcase made by a local craftsman sits at the back wall and hosts a wealth of reading material. TAKK’s feature wall presents a selection of photographs by nationally acclaimed Norwegian Mats Wibe Lund; each image depicts a slice of Icelandic life, landscapes, farms and communities between 1956-1978. On our visit we also spotted a vintage Scandinavian map alongside artwork by Manchester-based illustrator Nick Chaffe.
A Scandinavian hideaway in Manchester’s creative quarter, Hannaway has stocked up on past issues of National Geographic and Monocle and other travel literature such as Alfred Wainwright’s Pictorial Guide to the Lakeland Fells and numerous Readers Digest city guides that can all be found in store. Alongside the printed matter is also a selection of miscellaneous items including vintage board games, origami and porcelain dogs (many of which are Hannaway's own).
