In the heart of London is The Espresso Room, an independent speciality coffee shop located in Bloomsbury. Since opening in July 2009, the award-winning store has served up consistently high quality coffee and now enjoys a loyal following amongst London’s coffee enthusiasts. Owner Ben Townsend previously trained as a barista in Melbourne (Australia) after resigning from his office job and following a period working for Andrew Lew, owner of the Mailing Room, Townsend returned to London in 2005 to set up a training and coffee consultancy business whose clients included the London School of Coffee.
The Espresso Room coffee shop is small but perfectly formed and influenced by the kiosk-style premises that Townsend had spotted across Melbourne. Inside, The Espresso Room’s interior is minimally designed and reflects Townsend’s appreciation of Japanese woodwork and the workings of American artist Donald Judd. The store’s natural design and furnishings are made with wood, concrete and black Valchromat, completed in collaboration with friend and craftsman Tim Hitchens from Design by Timber at his Wiltshire-based studio.
On the menu is coffee brewed by East London’s multi-award winning coffee roaster Square mile as well as guest coffee from Staffordshire-based Has Bean. Tea from Postcard Teas can also be found on the menu alongside and cakes from Bea’s of Bloomsbury.
The Espresso Room is located in a neighbourhood full of flourishing independents; check out Folk Clothing, The Darkroom and Persephone Books, all found around the corner on Lambs Conduit Street.
