The Milestone sits in the centre of Kelham Island, one of Sheffield's oldest industrial districts. Surrounded by red brick former mill houses, disused power stations and cobbled streets, The Milestone’s two-storey white facade is perched on the corner of Green Lane and Ball Street, adjacent to former steel manufacture Alfred Beckett & Sons.

Originally The Ball Inn established in 1833, the venue has evolved from a mid-19th century watering hole to a smart gastropub committed to using local produce. The menus are comprehensive and include Sunday brunch, cocktails and classic English evening fare alongside creative puddings and a vast cheese selection. All ingredients are seasonal and dictated by availability but key suppliers include local free-range farm in Grenoside who exclusively rear rare breed pigs for the Milestone as well as supplying the venue with hen's eggs (pictured).

On our visit we sampled the light and colourful beetroot and whipped truffled goats cheese, kale and spiced nuts salad with mustard dressing; a delicate dish created by the kitchen team under the direction of General Manager Matt Clapson. Other more substantial highlights included the Barnsley Chop with white anchovies, preserved lemon, mint and a summer new potato salad alongside a well-chosen wine menu featuring wines from Western Australia's Margaret River appellation.

A selection of various guest ales from local Kelham Island brewery (located just around the corner) can be found behind the bar as well as American bottles from Brooklyn Brewery who are said to be inspired by Sheffield's own Kelham Island. The Milestone often have a guest menu featuring produce of the week; check the website for more details.
