Located on Marylebone's Chiltern Street only a few doors up from its elder sibling Trunk, Trunk LABS is the second venture by Swedish-born owner Mats Klingberg. Following the success of clothing store Trunk, which has gained a loyal international following since opening in September 2010, Trunk LABS focuses solely on accessories of the highest quality.
Acronym LABS stands for luggage, accessories, bags and shoes and the accessory-only focus acts as a opportunity for Klindberg to experiment with an edit of accessory labels from Japan, Italy, Australia, Sweden and the UK. Since opening in June 2012, Trunk LABS has redefined the accessory and its vast selection spans across luggage, bags, shoes, belts, pocket squares, neckwear, as well as apothecary, stationary, eyewear and homeware.
The 30sqm store presents a selection of accessories including pieces from Comme des Garçons, Le Labo, Aesop, Cire Trudon and BAG 'n' NOUN. Office wares such as Midori, Kaweco and Postalco line the tables alongside everyday essentials from London Undercover and Swedish newcomer Sun Budqdies. Trunk LABS also stocks exclusive and otherwise hard to find brands including Ichizawa Hanpu, a 100-year-old Kyoto-based bag maker and London outfitter S.E.H Kelly.
The store's interior acts a backdrop to best showcase the products and features a palette of warm grey, concrete floors and wood furniture sourced from Andrew Weaving's Century, a former Chiltern Street neighbour. It's clear that Klingberg's upbringing has played a part in the store's design that contains accents of 1970s Scandivinavia, Swedish minimalist influence and contemporary styling.
Although Trunk LABS is, as Klingberg describes, a space to experiment with different products from all over the world, the store certainly doesn't appear as trial and error.
