Located in Hiroshima (Hiroshima Prefecture), U Shed is a coffee stand whose daily motto 'Coffee with happy life' reflects their philosophy to create a location where locals casually gather.

Opened in April 2015 by graphic designer/photographer Taiichi Yamada and his partner Miki, U Shed resides in Taiichi's grandmother's house, a two-storey Showa building which had previously remained vacant for 15 years. Taiichi and Miki moved from Tokyo to renovate the historic building, built in 1985 to start U Shed which occupies the spacious ground floor.

From the street you're greeted by a beautiful wooden frontage, loose plants and succulents plus a hand painted U Shed A-Board. Inside, the clean, minimal space designed by Taiichi features a concrete coffee bar, antiques and various plant life in particular the orchid species, all selected by Miki. Miscellaneous goods for sale include Snow Shoveling's New York Coffee Shop Journal and Big Mountain's Reflector Badges, while staff can be seen wearing in-house Ujina T-Shirts.

Hand-drawn chalkboards display the seasonal U Shed menu which includes coffee sourced from Brazil, Colombia, Guatemala, and Ethiopia, all roasted to an original U-Shed blend by the Itsuki coffee roasting company. The U Shed menu also offers ice cream, gelato, baked sweets and homemade lemonade, Keema curry/lemon Panini, which all use local Hiroshima lemons.

Nearby independents recommended to us by Taiichi includes Taiko Udon and a Wine bar called Plasterd Saloon.
