Zakka (Japanese for 'a variety of products') is a design-based bookshop and artist collective located in New York's DUMBO district. First opened in 1994 in Manhattan, the store relocated to its current industrial setting on the East River waterfront in 2007.
Founded by Toshiki Okazaki, Zakka is a creative hub for art enthusiasts and collectors who flock from afar to pick up hard-to-find design publications imported from Japan and Europe as well as collectible vinyls, independently designed and international apparel and rare toys that include Astro Boy, Totoro, Poko & Peko, and Godzilla figurines. Zakka also hosts a 'creators market' where local artists can display their works including zines, hand-screened canvas bags, artwork, sculptures, apparel and stationary.
The colourful products brighten up the untreated cement floors and walls and low tables are piled with magazines, books and an expansive array of Japanese toys and gifts. The store itself has been created in line with the post-industrial history of the building and features exposed metal piping and glass dividers throughout.
Although the store is well stocked, abundant natural light keeps the space from feeling too crowded and Zakka's team (made up of musicians, graphic designers and various other Brooklyn creatives) are always on hand to help. Whether your an art professional or casual browser, this design and art bookstore should be on your map; on our visit we spotted one of a kind postcards by contemporary Japanese artists.
