Norden Goods | Leucadia, California (USA) | By Lee Fleming

California-based Norden Goods is located in Encinitas and run by husband and wife duo Erika and Pete Panciera. Their design philosophy is rooted in heritage and quality and by ensuring longevity, the pair aim to create products that counter disposable culture. Inspired by past experiences, memories and travels, their aim is to capture the emotional connections we make every day through miscellaneous objects.

By supporting local manufacturers, Norden Goods have recently released their first collection of scented candles. Made with soy wax and high quality, natural fragrances and essentials oils, the candles are poured at their Leucadia-based studio into stoneware containers and hand thrown in Encinitas. The scents include Monhegan (Sandalwood, Tobacco, Leather), Leucadia (Oakmoss, Pine, Citrus, Wood Smoke) and Big Sur (Oakmoss, Pine, Citrus, Wood Smoke), scents inspired by the Panciera’s travels. Norden Goods are available from their online store and selected stockists include Beam & Anchor (Portland) and Voyager (San Francisco) and Gym Standard (San Diego).

Patrick Thomson at The New Craftsmen | London (UK) | By Emma Harrison

Trained in menswear at the Royal College of Art, London-based Patrick Thomson creates understated and carefully designed pieces using natural materials. With a workshop in Stroud, Gloucestershire, Thomson has presented his 'Ordinary Thing' collection on The New Craftsmen, an online platform that promotes and sells the work of up-and-coming craft makers from across the British Isles. Pieces from the collection include a Gardener’s apron, vibrant cushions and an oversized ‘Nosebag’ intended as an ‘everyday shopper for the farmer’s market forager’. Each item in the collection is made from canvas, hessian or horsehair and is an example of Thomson’s intention to revitalise plain materials with good and strong design.

IDMC°’s favourite pick is the Log Holder (above) made from highly durable, heavy-weight, water-resistant and rot-proof fabric with sturdy cotton herringbone tape on the straps. The perfect size for collecting logs and woodland scraps to chuck on the fire and warm up those long winter evenings.

Patagonia presents Damnation | Ventura, California (USA) | By Lee Fleming

A influential film documentary, Damnation aims to highlight the mayhem and negative ecological factors caused by these hulking and obsolute structures. Federally governed dams such as the Ice Harbor Dam, the Lower Monumental Dam, the Little Goose Dam and the Lower Granite Dam have been named as the most harmful in the US as they provide minimal value and cost millions to maintain yet actively harm public safety, ecosystems, fisheries and tribal culture.

This short film by Ben Knight and Travis Rummel (Felt Soul Media Production) is one of sheer natural beauty, impressive cinematography and unexpected discoveries. It focuses solely on the rivers, landscapes and cultural change altered by dams and is presented by outdoor specialist Patagonia and the company’s founder, environmentalist and Executive Producer, Yvon Chouinard. Alongside co-director Travis Rummel, co-producer Matt Stoecker (Stoeker Ecological ) also provided the underwater cinematography for the film which will be screened across the world, having started on Monday 8th September at Rosebud Theater, Wauwatosa (Wisconsin). All the screenings of Damnation are listed on the website.

A petition to ‘crack down on deadbeat dams’ has been created in conjunction with the Damnation documentary film and is backed by supporting partners Patagonia and Save Our Wild Salmon. The petition aims to raise awareness and change America’s national attitude by calling on President Barack Obama to intervene and take action.

Campaign Furniture by Ghurka | New York (USA)

Ghurka was founded in the early 1970s by Marley Hodgson. After visiting an antiques auction, he left with a piece of campaign gear made for a Ghurka regimental officer stationed in India during the 1900s and was inspired by the rugged elegance of the 75-year-old leather. Hodgson went on to make his first Ghurka bag - a leather knapsack for his son that is still used on a daily basis by his granddaughter. Since then Ghurka have continued to make leather bags and accessories with a commitment to traditional craftsmanship, functionality and timeless American style.

To celebrate their design heritage, Ghurka’s latest Campaign Furniture Collection pays homage to the great expeditions that crossed Asia and Africa in the early 20th century. The arresting collection consists of seven pieces, masterfully handmade in New York with solid oak, supple vegetable-tanned calfskin and brass hardware.
