Julian Lechner | Kaffeeform | Berlin (GER) | By Lee Fleming

Our obsession with ceramics continues with these Kaffeeform Coffee Cups but it's what there made of that's caught our attention the most. Designed by German designer Julian Lechner who started Kaffeeform Coffee Cups in 2009 while working in Italy, where he studied design at the Free University of Bozen. Lechner experimented with used coffee grounds by recycling them using an injection-moulding process to fabricate to combine them with other renewable materials like wood grains and natural glues.

After five years of experimentation Lechner discovered a unique formula which transforms the leftover coffee, collected from local cafes in Berlin into his Kaffeeform products. The surface of Kaffeeform has the appearance of dark marblewood and still retains the smell of coffee in its final form.

Designed specifically for drinking espresso coffee, you can now pre-order the Kaffeeform Coffee Cups from their website.

Norden Goods | Leucadia, California (USA) | By Lee Fleming

California-based Norden Goods is located in Encinitas and run by husband and wife duo Erika and Pete Panciera. Their design philosophy is rooted in heritage and quality and by ensuring longevity, the pair aim to create products that counter disposable culture. Inspired by past experiences, memories and travels, their aim is to capture the emotional connections we make every day through miscellaneous objects.

By supporting local manufacturers, Norden Goods have recently released their first collection of scented candles. Made with soy wax and high quality, natural fragrances and essentials oils, the candles are poured at their Leucadia-based studio into stoneware containers and hand thrown in Encinitas. The scents include Monhegan (Sandalwood, Tobacco, Leather), Leucadia (Oakmoss, Pine, Citrus, Wood Smoke) and Big Sur (Oakmoss, Pine, Citrus, Wood Smoke), scents inspired by the Panciera’s travels. Norden Goods are available from their online store and selected stockists include Beam & Anchor (Portland) and Voyager (San Francisco) and Gym Standard (San Diego).

Ceramic Paint / Collection Cornwall by Kirstie van Noort | Eindhoven (NL) | By Emma Harrison

Up until the early 1990s, Cornwall was home to many mines rich in copper, tin and silver. After the mines were forced to close and all sign of industrial extraction had long departed, the landscape was left stained with a faded yet colourful palette of natural resources.

In 2011, Dutch ceramicist Kirstie van Noort set out to explore this trail of deposits strung across the county. The two week search eventually lead to the development of the 108 different colours now found in her impressive collection, with the base of every shade originating from just one of the twelve materials that are scattered across the now largely disused and filled Cornwall mines.

Once dried, ground and diluted with water, the paints were developed and applied to earthenware and china and the end results can be found in Van Noort’s work entitled ‘Ceramic Paint/Collection Cornwall’. The three objects in the collection, Bugle, Geevor and Nanpean have been named after the places where the materials were found and developed to ‘give an impression of the impact their respective footprints have left on the landscape’.

Kirstie van Noort has documented her journey and the process of ceramic paint development in a book and photojournal, available on her website.
