Stacked | Malte Brandenburg | Berlin (GER) | By Lee Fleming

We recently came across the portfolio of self-taught photographer Malte Brandenburg who is also co-founder of arts collective Copenhagen Format. Copenhagen-based Brandenburg previously lived in Berlin where he completed 'Stacked', a visual documentation of post-war housing estates in Berlin. Often built in form of tower blocks and in a fairly identical fashion, Brandenburg's Stacked photography series looks closer at these affordable housing structures to find variation of sorts.

Berlin-Dahlem Botanical Garden and Botanical Museum | Berlin (GER) | By Michael Gannon

A friend of mine who lives in Berlin recommended that I should head to the the Berlin-Dahlem Botanical Garden and Botanical Museum near König-Louise-Stra. I arrived around 1pm, the light was perfect especially around the Pavilion Victoria and Cactus Pavilion. Although I did run into a problem with my lens steaming up due to the 30º temperatures within the Great Pavilion, it was still definitely worth the capturing the tropic environment.

Issue 48: Sweet Airs | Sleek Magazine | Berlin, (GER) | By Michael Gannon

I recently came across Sleek Magazine whilst on my research trip to Berlin exploring the city's extensive independent offering. The Berlin-based publication is a art magazine in the widest sense, opting for a progressive view on what we label 'art' today. Beautifully designed, the magazine documents and explores the visual contemporary while its online platform translates the visual and intellectual experience into lighter, easy-to-digest content, issued daily by Sleek's team of creative contributors.

The current issue 'Sweet Airs' (Winter 2015/16) is dedicated to the most fleeting of arts; scent. The nose driven issue features “Molecular Materiality” by author Arielle Bier dissects how artists from Anicka Yi to Sean Raspet are using smells, both fair and foul in their practice. Furthermore Sleek set 20 artists including Wolfgang Tillmans and Olafur Eliasson the task of documenting scent as inspiration in an exclusive portfolio. Other features include an interview with artist Martynka Wawrzyniak and LA artist Frances Stark alongside profiling the late photographer Sascha Weidner.

Purchase the latest issue of Sleek Magazine on their website or at one of their international stockists which includes Do Your Read Me (Berlin), Village Bookstore (Leeds) and Artwords (London).

Julian Lechner | Kaffeeform | Berlin (GER) | By Lee Fleming

Our obsession with ceramics continues with these Kaffeeform Coffee Cups but it's what there made of that's caught our attention the most. Designed by German designer Julian Lechner who started Kaffeeform Coffee Cups in 2009 while working in Italy, where he studied design at the Free University of Bozen. Lechner experimented with used coffee grounds by recycling them using an injection-moulding process to fabricate to combine them with other renewable materials like wood grains and natural glues.

After five years of experimentation Lechner discovered a unique formula which transforms the leftover coffee, collected from local cafes in Berlin into his Kaffeeform products. The surface of Kaffeeform has the appearance of dark marblewood and still retains the smell of coffee in its final form.

Designed specifically for drinking espresso coffee, you can now pre-order the Kaffeeform Coffee Cups from their website.

Viction:ary | CITIx60 Art Print Project | Hong Kong (CHN) | By Lee Fleming

Recently released, the CITIx60 Art Print Project is an extension of CITIx60 City Guides, a collaboration created by Hong Kong-based Viction:ary and a handful of acclaimed designers that also includes selected city maps. Founded in 2001 by Victor Cheung, Viction:ary is the publishing arm of design house Viction Workshop Ltd. who specialise in visual arts and design publishing from East and West.

Alongside the publication, their inspirational city guide series highlights 60 venues recommended by a local creative in each location. To complement this, Viction:ary's CITIx60 Art Print Project consists of beautifully illustrated maps of exaggerated details which re-examine the distinctive landscapes of Tokyo, Paris and Berlin. The limited edition maps are produced as high quality art prints, 60 respectively at A1 and A2 formats.

The adventurous illustrations by New Zealand and Japan-based Masako Kubo (Tokyo map), Scottish illustrator and designer Allan Deas (Paris map) and Helsinki-based Vesa Sammalisto (Berlin map) were especially commissioned for this project and can be viewed on the Viction:ary website.
