Where They Create / Japan | Paul Barbera | By Lee Fleming

The latest publication by photographer Paul Barbera entitled 'Where They Create /Japan' offers a holistic view into Japan's design culture as he goes behind-the-scenes to document the environments and working processes of the most creative minds in Japan.

This volume of the 'Where They Create' series takes on a different approach by exploring the theme of his series through geographical locales. Through the lens of creative spaces belonging to the likes of Kenya Hara, Kengo Kuma, Tokujin Yoshioka, Engineered Garments and Nendo to name but a few. Barbera chronicles his journey as he experiences contemporary Japanese design and art culture first hand. Designed by FRAME Publishers and written by Kanae Hasegawa, Where They Create /Japan is a bookshelf must for the IDMC° team.

Travel Update | Buenos Aires (ARG) | By Michael Gannon

I made the decision to move to a new city to take on a new challenge and enhance my photography. That city is Buenos Aires, Argentina. I find travel photography has a unique ability to transport people from their daily lives. I certainly feel more aware of my surroundings when I am in a new city, (as I’m sure most photographers do). The uncertainty of things, the mystery of it all and countless unrepeatable, fleeting scenarios of people in their environment, their gestures, their poses. Alongside preparing our next IDMC° Map of the Argentinian Capital we'll be corresponding on our daily experiences.

Isle of Arran | Arran (SCO) | By Michael Gannon

The images above were taken during the third week of my visit to Scotland, in particular the Isle of Arran. On arrival I had the pleasure of meeting Stephen and his wife Debbie who were kind enough to take me around the island for a few hours in their car. Even with some stormy weather to contend with, I was taken back by how visually stunning the landscape was.

We're excited for the release of the Residents: Inside the Iconic Barbican Estate book by our good friend Anton Rodriguez. The London-based freelance photographer currently resides in the Barbican Estate, the perfect abode to document neighbouring residents in one of London's most recognised brutalist architectural sites. Located in London's financial district, the Barbican Estate was built during the 1960s and the 1970s and is occupied by over 4,000 residents alongside the Barbican Centre, the Guildhall School of Music & Drama and the London Symphony Orchestra.

Having started photographing Barbican residents within the intimate settings of their own home as part of a VSCO Artist Initiative project, Anton's intriguing photo series has deservedly been published in the form a 160 page book. Featuring more than 22 Barbican residents and residences Anton encapsulates the incredible interiors and creative people who live in the iconic Brutalist estate.

Designed by Shoreditch-based design & brand development agency EACH London, the book features an essay by design writer Katie Treggiden who explores the history of the site and why there is such an interest in seeing ‘behind the scenes’.
