Foster Huntington | Home Is Where You Park It | (US) | By Lee Fleming

One of the most recent publications to be added to the IDMC° bookcase is Home Is Where You Park It, a photographic exploration from photographer and nomad Foster Huntington. After the first 2000 copies sold out immediately and proved immensely popular, Huntington released a much anticipated second edition of his photo series.

In 2011, Foster Huntington left his dream job designing for Ralph Lauren, packed up and drove out of New York City in a VW Vanagon in order to travel around North America. With eighty thousand miles on his camper, Huntington lives a self-contained and spontaneous life, covered in detail on his popular daily blog A Restless Transplant, a journal that documents fellow travellers and their campers of all shapes and sizes.

Under the #vanlife hashtag, Huntington uploads his shots to Instagram and gives a personal insight into the campers, people and stories that inspire him on a daily basis. Before long #vanlife grew into a photography project, funded through a successful Kickstarter campaign, that highlights his favourite camper vans, pickup trucks and the unpredictable delights of life. Designed by New York-based Doubleday & Cartwright, who are also responsible for the Victory Journal, Home Is Where You Park It is a 125-page photography book dedicated to life on the road, steeped in the ‘keep on Trucking’ nostalgia of the 1970s.

Norden Goods | Leucadia, California (USA) | By Lee Fleming

California-based Norden Goods is located in Encinitas and run by husband and wife duo Erika and Pete Panciera. Their design philosophy is rooted in heritage and quality and by ensuring longevity, the pair aim to create products that counter disposable culture. Inspired by past experiences, memories and travels, their aim is to capture the emotional connections we make every day through miscellaneous objects.

By supporting local manufacturers, Norden Goods have recently released their first collection of scented candles. Made with soy wax and high quality, natural fragrances and essentials oils, the candles are poured at their Leucadia-based studio into stoneware containers and hand thrown in Encinitas. The scents include Monhegan (Sandalwood, Tobacco, Leather), Leucadia (Oakmoss, Pine, Citrus, Wood Smoke) and Big Sur (Oakmoss, Pine, Citrus, Wood Smoke), scents inspired by the Panciera’s travels. Norden Goods are available from their online store and selected stockists include Beam & Anchor (Portland) and Voyager (San Francisco) and Gym Standard (San Diego).

Scout Seattle | Reissue: Boy Scout Diary 17th Edition | Seattle (USA) | By Lee Fleming

Ben Masters of Washington-based Scout Seattle presents an ever-growing collection of durable and stylish camping kit items alongside one-of-a-kind reissue pieces sourced from around the world. Each piece from the Reissue Collection has a remarkable story to tell and encapsulates the history of different people, places and eras. The Boy Scout Diary (17th Edition), published by The Boy Scouts of America National Council in 1929 (pictured) caught my eye in particular - a quintessential Boy Scout Handbook for those who remember ‘doing a good turn daily'. The 256-page handbook has it all covered, from ‘Badges and Insignia’, ‘How to Fold Clothes’, ‘Weather Signal Flags’, ‘Indian Sign Language’, ‘Songs’ and even a chart of ‘The International Metric System’.

Terrapin Stationers | New York (US) | By Lee Fleming

Terrapin Stationers Engravers New York USA Terrapin Stationers Engravers New York USA Terrapin Stationers Engravers New York USA Terrapin Stationers Engravers New York USA

A family business since 1913, Terrapin Stationers & Engraving Co. have produced some of the finest engraved and embossed stationery in New York for over a century. Previously run by husband-and-wife team Lloyd and Cathy Harrington, the business has surfed the waves of time in an ever-changing industry, spanning from the advent of the fax machine to the first ever email, pulled through by their dedication and craftsmanship.

When Lloyd and Cathy retired in 2010, son Ted and his wife Cathy took over and continue to produce a line of notes, business and calling cards alongside an in-house stationery collection made in their print studio on 37th Street. Crafted from the highest quality cotton and card stock, each piece is pressed to form sharply defined, raised impressions that, according to Terrapin ‘have made engraving the preferred method of high-end printing for centuries’.
