Richard Johnson | Ice Huts | Toronto (CA) | By Emma Harrison

The simple ice fishing hut is a familiar sight across the snowy plains of Canada and serves an essential purpose; it must be weather resistant, easily transportable and provide basic shelter and access to the ground below.  Travelling around icy terrain and exploring the differences between ice hut architecture between provinces, photographer Richard Johnson created his Ice Huts project in order to document Canada’s ice fishing culture.

Now in its 8th year, the project contains more than 725 images of individual huts across nine provinces (top left: Lesser Slave Lake, Alberta; top right: Anglin Lake, Saskatchewan; bottom left: Yamachiche, Quebec; bottom right: Lake Scugog, Ontario). In 2010, Johnson began to shoot his series Ice Villages and travelled to Northern Quebec, Manitoba and New Brunswick to capture a set of wide panoramic shots that integrate the ice hut structures into the background landscape. The Ice Village series will be displayed at Bulthaup until April 18th 2015 as part of the Toronto Design Offsite Festival, happening this week (January 19th-25th).

If you’re in town this Sunday, don’t miss the complimentary Artist Talk & Brunch with Richard himself.

Norden Goods | Leucadia, California (USA) | By Lee Fleming

California-based Norden Goods is located in Encinitas and run by husband and wife duo Erika and Pete Panciera. Their design philosophy is rooted in heritage and quality and by ensuring longevity, the pair aim to create products that counter disposable culture. Inspired by past experiences, memories and travels, their aim is to capture the emotional connections we make every day through miscellaneous objects.

By supporting local manufacturers, Norden Goods have recently released their first collection of scented candles. Made with soy wax and high quality, natural fragrances and essentials oils, the candles are poured at their Leucadia-based studio into stoneware containers and hand thrown in Encinitas. The scents include Monhegan (Sandalwood, Tobacco, Leather), Leucadia (Oakmoss, Pine, Citrus, Wood Smoke) and Big Sur (Oakmoss, Pine, Citrus, Wood Smoke), scents inspired by the Panciera’s travels. Norden Goods are available from their online store and selected stockists include Beam & Anchor (Portland) and Voyager (San Francisco) and Gym Standard (San Diego).

Att Pynta | London (UK) | By Emma Harrison

Att Pynta is the brainchild from Kai Price and Amanda Nelson. Both raised in Gothenburg, the pair met in London whilst working in fashion PR and came together through a shared love of affordable and contemporary homeware. Launched in autumn 2014, the online brand combines a distinctly Scandinavian aesthetic with strong British design to form a collection of stylish textiles, kitchenware, homeware and lighting.

The Att Pynta website is full of inspiration and boasts an impressive and select list of designers. Products are created by Nordic and UK-based designers and include the Brass Frame Portrait (top left, £38) from fair-trade manufacturer Nkuku and the sumptuous woollen Beehive Throw (bottom right, £60.00) by Tweedmill, based in Wales. The locally produced products on the online store sit neatly next to Scandinavian designs, from Danish Goose Feather lampshades to ceramics from Swede Marie L Sundegren.

You can visit Att Pynta’s store online or catch them at Broadway Market in East London every Saturday. We’ve also heard there may be a pop-store in the pipeline for 2015 - watch this space.

Viction:ary | CITIx60 Art Print Project | Hong Kong (CHN) | By Lee Fleming

Recently released, the CITIx60 Art Print Project is an extension of CITIx60 City Guides, a collaboration created by Hong Kong-based Viction:ary and a handful of acclaimed designers that also includes selected city maps. Founded in 2001 by Victor Cheung, Viction:ary is the publishing arm of design house Viction Workshop Ltd. who specialise in visual arts and design publishing from East and West.

Alongside the publication, their inspirational city guide series highlights 60 venues recommended by a local creative in each location. To complement this, Viction:ary's CITIx60 Art Print Project consists of beautifully illustrated maps of exaggerated details which re-examine the distinctive landscapes of Tokyo, Paris and Berlin. The limited edition maps are produced as high quality art prints, 60 respectively at A1 and A2 formats.

The adventurous illustrations by New Zealand and Japan-based Masako Kubo (Tokyo map), Scottish illustrator and designer Allan Deas (Paris map) and Helsinki-based Vesa Sammalisto (Berlin map) were especially commissioned for this project and can be viewed on the Viction:ary website.
